Teaching practice

Today I observed my very first lesson for the teacher practice period.

I observed an IB lesson; Business and Management with IB2 students. They are preparing for their final exams to come in May so I got the feeling that at this point everything they do and learn is directly related with their final exams.

First they talked about a case study that was in fact taken from an old final examination paper. The students had done a SWAT analysis based on that case study and they analyzed each different point during the class which was interesting to listen to. Surprisingly many issues can in fact be seen either as a weakness or a strength or in fact as an opportunity or a threat. This might just be the case in life in general.

What was nice to see was the fact that the students were so actively involved in discussing the analysis. I see this as a direct result of how the teacher was professionally leading the conversation in the class.

Towards the end of the lesson, given such a heavy emphasis on the final exams to come, I started pondering on an old question that often comes up in the IB context; are the students in the class room to study and learn for life or are they there simply and strictly to do well in the final exam, with no outlook on life beyond that?
